Brothers Working Together

Shakel Bhat was born into a small and humble family in Srinagar. He was affected by polio as an infant. His parents had tried their best and managed to get an operation done so that he would be a little mobile. His childhood was challenging compared to others as he was not able to play and move around. He has two brothers who were a great support.

Shakel Bhat says, “My mother knew it was very important for me to learn some skills and be able to stand on my own feet although my father thought I wouldn't be able to learn much and so he didn't encourage me to try out new things, My mother persuaded me to take training in how to make leather products from my uncle who was in the leather business. I started to learn young and I am now involved in making leather products with my brothers.”

Shakel lives with his brothers in Srinagar and he is able to contribute to the family expenses and needs by working and he is a member of Care Kashmir and organisation of artisans with disabilities.

He says,” With the increase in the cost of living, I am glad that I can work with my brothers and contribute to the family income. I am happy doing that and it feels dignified."

There are no suede leather bags or purses from Kashmir in our wholesale shop but they are available in our shop in Uday Park, New Delhi.
